A Very Appropriate Interruption

I was happily teaching away in my E5-B class when suddenly, I was interrupted. Not by a student, which would be normal, but by the most unexpected thing ever: a chicken. That's right, a real, live, chirping chicken. One of the boys apparently just got a chick and decided to bring it to school with him. How appropriate, considering that I was just doing the chicken dance this morning!

How does one properly handle a chicken interrupting their lesson? As this was not covered in any of the education courses I took in college, I had to ad lib. So, I decided to handle the situation with humor. I invited the chick to join us in singing, praised it for singing well (it did actually chirp along with the song), and warned the students not to cheat by asking the chick for answers. The lesson went quite well, and I think even the chick had a pretty good time.

For the record, this post is not an April Fools joke. It honestly happened!

"Passage—immediate passage! the blood burns in my veins! Away, O soul! hoist instantly the anchor!
Cut the hawsers—haul out—shake out every sail!
Have we not stood here like trees in the ground long enough?
Have we not grovell’d here long enough, eating and drinking like mere brutes?
Have we not darken’d and dazed ourselves with books long enough?

Sail forth! steer for the deep waters only!
Reckless, O soul, exploring, I with thee, and thou with me;
For we are bound where mariner has not yet dared to go, And we will risk the ship, ourselves and all.

O my brave soul!
O farther, farther sail!
O daring joy, but safe! Are they not all the seas of God?
O farther, farther, farther sail!"

~Walt Whitman, "Passage to India"
