Korean Nachos

Today being Friday, Cate decided we should do a cooking activity with the kindergartners. About a month ago she asked me for suggestions for things we could cook with the kids and I rattled off a list of possible ideas. One of those ideas was nachos, which I honestly never thought would work. Cate loved the idea though, so today we made nachos with the kids.

It was quite entertaining. I think the most common phrase used by Cate and I today was "Careful with the knife!" (Cate wanted to let the kids cut up the peppers and tomatoes). These nachos were a bit different from the ones I used to make at home, since refried beans and taco seasoning don't seem to exist over here (unless they're at Cosco?). The kids had a blast cutting, and I had a great time watching them! The dull knives weren't terribly effective for cutting the tomatoes, so the kids were doing everything from stabbing the tomatoes to sawing intently at them. Sam figured his teeth would be more effective, so I had to persuade him against that idea.

The kids were a bit bewildered at first by the finished product. They wanted to taste it, but they didn't want to touch it. So, we wound up feeding the kids at first, until they felt a bit more confident with the strange new food. Overall, they liked it. I had to laugh though when Cate, my fantastic director, whipped out a pair of chopsticks to eat nachos with. It was like a blending of two very different, yet in some ways similar, cultures. So, I had another random Korean experience as I, too, ate my nachos with chopsticks.

"Passage—immediate passage! the blood burns in my veins! Away, O soul! hoist instantly the anchor!
Cut the hawsers—haul out—shake out every sail!
Have we not stood here like trees in the ground long enough?
Have we not grovell’d here long enough, eating and drinking like mere brutes?
Have we not darken’d and dazed ourselves with books long enough?

Sail forth! steer for the deep waters only!
Reckless, O soul, exploring, I with thee, and thou with me;
For we are bound where mariner has not yet dared to go, And we will risk the ship, ourselves and all.

O my brave soul!
O farther, farther sail!
O daring joy, but safe! Are they not all the seas of God?
O farther, farther, farther sail!"
