A Bad Situation

Today the ongoing heated situation between North and South Korea got worse. I have been following this situation closely for the past few weeks, and I have to say, Kim Jong-Il is making me nervous. The guy is an arrogant idiot whose sanity is rather questionable. Last week he expelled eleven South Koreans from a joint industrial park and test-fired missiles off the west coast. Today he has made severe threats against the South and broken off dialogue with Seoul. South Korea has also made some threats, which didn't really help matters. Kim is claiming now that the two Koreas are on the brink of another war.

Technically, the Korean War is still ongoing. There was no peace agreement signed in 1953, just a ceasefire. Over the past few years, things have gotten a bit more pleasant between the North and the South, but now relations are getting bad again. The new conservative president of South Korea, Lee Myung-Bak, has not met with approval from the North. Kim has accused Lee of being corrupted by the US.

I am definitely going to continue to keep a wary eye on the news. It would be practically suicidal for North Korea to attack, but Kim may not be smart enough to see that. I am really glad I don't live in Seoul!

"Passage—immediate passage! the blood burns in my veins! Away, O soul! hoist instantly the anchor!
Cut the hawsers—haul out—shake out every sail!
Have we not stood here like trees in the ground long enough?
Have we not grovell’d here long enough, eating and drinking like mere brutes?
Have we not darken’d and dazed ourselves with books long enough?

Sail forth! steer for the deep waters only!
Reckless, O soul, exploring, I with thee, and thou with me;
For we are bound where mariner has not yet dared to go, And we will risk the ship, ourselves and all.

O my brave soul!
O farther, farther sail!
O daring joy, but safe! Are they not all the seas of God?
O farther, farther, farther sail!"

~Walt Whitman, "Passage to India"
